Yesterday, in what was considered a relatively unimportant league match against the Delhi Capitals, MS Dhoni showed his CSK teammates, as well as the fans, what he is still capable of.
When he walked in, CSK was in tatters – needing a virtually impossible 72 runs off 23 balls. Within a few minutes, Dhoni changed the equation and almost pulled off a stunning victory out of what would have been a decisive loss. As he blasted 37 runs off just 16 balls – an innings that included four boundaries and three sixes – Dhoni showed that if needed, he could still do what he has done so many times at the national and international level over his long and storied career.
Why MS Dhoni Should Bat up the Order for CSK
Dhoni has two things that no other batsman in CSK has – long experience in playing crucial, match-winning knocks under extreme pressure and the ability to play a wide range of shots, even off good balls.
While other players like Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, and Shivam Dube can hit the ball all day long, they lack the experience that Dhoni has – especially when playing under tense, high-pressure situations. This is why, when the top order fails to fire like they did yesterday, the middle-order batsmen feel pressured and find it hard to score fluently – especially when they are chasing a big target.
Moreover, Dube is not as good as playing fast bowlers as he is playing spinners. When there is a situation where the spinners in the opposition team do not have too many overs left, which was the case yesterday, Dhoni can move up the order and let Dube bat down the order. It can be particularly useful in situations where the team needs to score more than 10 runs an over – as was the case yesterday.
Lastly, a vast majority of CSK fans pay to see Dhoni bat. It is only fair to let them see more of him.
