While expansion is important, protection measures such as cybersecurity is equally crucial to a small to medium business. There is a myriad of articles on how to utilize the latest technology to grow your business, but not enough people talk about securing the company’s digital assets properly. Several business owners and managers have the misconception that their firms can never be attacked because they’re ‘too small’. As a result, most SMBs are exposed to numerous phishing attacks, malware, and ransomware prowling the internet in search of vulnerable systems.

Research by Datto has shown that 1 in 5 SMBs get hit by ransomware attacks. If you’re a business owner or manager using computer services, you need to secure the network with a VPN, install a firewall, and use solid passwords to prevent privacy breaches. A privacy breach leading to loss of data could spell doom for your firm.

Below, you’ll find the best ways to strengthen your cybersecurity level in the simplest ways possible.

Strategies to use to Prevent Cyberattacks

cyberattacks

Strengthen your Passwords

The easiest way for a hacker to gain access to your network is to get your password. Some business owners tend to use easy passwords like relatives’ names. A good number of these entrepreneurs can even use the same weak password across several accounts, simplifying the hacker’s job.

To prevent cyberattacks on your systems you need to use a unique and strong password for each service, modify your password frequently, and activate two-factor authentication. A strong password consists of a string of upper and lowercase letters, symbols and numbers. That way a hacker would never be able to guess your password.

You also need to take precautions such as never sending your passwords online or writing them down on paper. If you find it hard to remember your passwords, use a password manager.

Setup a Firewall

If your business uses a single internet connection for all work devices, then the probability of hackers probing your network is high. Hackers are always looking for vulnerable computer networks they can gain access to. Once they succeed, large amounts of data are stolen, leading to a potential wreck of the business.

To prevent this, you need to set up a firewall. A firewall works by filtering dangerous packets of data, thereby protecting a computer network. They protect your local network from the numerous threats on the internet. You can install a firewall for your router or on individual computers.

Utilizing a VPN

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. VPNs are typically used to access the internet anonymously. They perform this action by encrypting data, making certain you will never be tracked by anyone on the internet. A VPN also prevents your data from being spied on.

VPNs offer several benefits to SMBs like the protection of sensitive data. If your firm depends on the privacy of client data, a VPN is the best tool for you. If traveling employees or freelancers in your firm get frustrated while trying to access websites or content that is geo-restricted, a VPN will bypass that geo-block.

VPN subscription services are also cheap and sometimes come with special packages for businesses.

Restrict Employee Access

Sometimes several employees can have access to sensitive company files. You need to give high-ranking members in your team access to certain types of data.

Some firms also use a general password for employees to login with. If a system breach occurs, it would be hard to track where it came from. By giving your employees individual accounts, you can determine where a privacy breach originated from.

Final Thoughts

Never assume that your business can never be attacked by hackers. You need to be prepared for a possible system breached by taking crucial steps. These steps include improving your password strength, using a VPN, giving top employees access to sensitive data, and utilizing a firewall.
