It is finally here! The official trailer of Jurassic World 2 – Fallen Kingdom was released a few days back and has captured the attention of millions of fans around the world already. Judging by the trailer, you can say that the movie will be a lot different from its predecessor, which is a good thing as Jurassic World was criticized by many for lacking genuinely scary, hair-raising moments, which the original Jurassic Park movies had in plenty.
Now, let us take a look at the five reasons why legions of fans around the world, including yours truly, are excited for the movie.
1. It Is Directed By J.A. Bayona
One of the main complaints fans had about Jurassic World was that it lacked genuinely scary moments. Think of the T-Rex scene in Jurassic Park or the bus hanging from the cliff scene in the Lost World. Jurassic World did not have any such heart-in-your-mouth moments. This is where the entry of J.A. Bayona into the franchise as the director gets interesting.
Bayona is the man who made The Orphanage, which is considered one of the greatest horror movies in recent times by critics and fans alike. He does not go for cheap scares either. The sense of horror in his movies feels much more natural and raw, which is quite a unique experience. So, you can be sure that Fallen Kingdom will have some ‘God; I did not see it coming’ moments.
Moreover, Bayona is also very good at developing characters that you can relate to and care about. One of his movies – The Impossible – is a very good example. So, you can expect him to give the characters, especially Claire, a little more depth, which is very much needed since her character in Jurassic World was pretty much the stereotypical white woman lead that you find in many Hollywood movies these days.
2. Animatronics
Now, this is something the franchise desperately needed. Jurassic World opted CGI over animatronics for the most part and the results were clearly visible on the screen. The CGI effects looked unrealistic at times, as a result of which many fans were disappointed as they were expecting to see some Jurassic Park level special effects.
In this movie, however, they have opted for animatronics, which is great news for fans. What made the original Jurassic Park movie so amazing were the life-sized animatronic dinosaurs which were equal parts awe-inspiring and terrifying. The subsequent sequels, on the contrary, relied too much on CGI and could never measure up to Jurassic Park. So, we can certainly hope that the special effects in Fallen Kingdom will be much better than what we saw in Jurassic World.
3. The Return of Jeff Goldblum
Let’s admit it; we all missed him terribly. In Jurassic Park and the Lost World, Goldblum’s character Ian Malcolm was the voice of reason. When scientists were too preoccupied with accomplishing things and getting results, he being the logician told them that they were wrong. In the end, he was proved to be right.
Also, the way Goldblum portrayed the character of Ian Malcolm was a treat to watch. He was casual, charming, flirtatious, witty, and acerbic all at once. Jurassic World and the terrible Jurassic Park 3 suffered a great deal due to the absence of Goldblum’s character. In this movie, they have rectified the mistake, as Goldblum not only appears in the trailer, but also mouths his famous line ‘life, uh, finds a way’. What more could we seriously ask for?
4. Change in Story Arc
Jurassic Park movies have pretty much the same template. Humans get into an island full of dinosaurs, things go wrong, some of them die, and the rest manage to get out at the end. While it was extremely exciting to watch for the first couple of times, it got a tad too stale in the subsequent sequels.
This movie, however, seems to have a different plot. The island full of dinosaurs is still there and humans still get into it, but to save the dinosaurs from an apocalyptic event. Apparently, the island is about to be destroyed by volcanic eruptions and it is up to Owen and Claire to save as many dinosaurs as possible.
A place where genetically modified dinosaurs roam around is scary enough; now they are telling us there are active volcanoes right in the middle of it? I can only imagine the insanely creative ways in which people are going to be killed in this movie. Remember the death of Claire’s personal assistant in Jurassic World? I’m hoping there is something even more over the top in this movie!
More interestingly, Colin Trevorrow, who directed Jurassic World and has co-written Fallen Kingdom, says that the trailer only shows a glimpse of what happens in the first half of the movie. The second half is going to be completely suspenseful, and going by Bayona’s reputation for building suspense and scaring the crap out of audience, we can be sure that the movie will have some nail-biting, edge-of-the-seat moments.
5. It Is a Dinosaur Movie!
Let us face it! Many of us really do not need a special reason to get excited for a dinosaur movie. The franchise has been extremely successful and popular, not just in the United States, but pretty much all over the world. Any time a new Jurassic Park movie is announced, fans wait with bated breath because they cannot get enough of those big, scary dinosaurs.
The movies, quite simply put, bring out the child in everyone and make movie watching an enthralling and immensely fun experience. So, the very fact that there is a new movie coming up in the Jurassic Park franchise is reason enough for most people to get excited. Plus, who does not want to see Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard on the large screen again?
The only complaint I have is that the movie set to release only in June 2018. That is an incredibly long wait. At this point, we can only hope that the wait is worth it and the movie delivers big time, surpassing its predecessor.
